The Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, located in Golden Valley, works in partnership with parents in crisis and the community to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect. They support families in crisis 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through their free, voluntary services that include a 24 hour crisis hotline, crisis counseling, parent education, and 72-hour residential child care. The Nursery is a warm, loving, and safe place where kids get to be kids while their parents take care of a family emergency. The Nursery gives parents a supportive, safe, and non-shaming environment in which to ask for help.
As part of our outreach ministry, St. Nicholas will provide support to the Nursery through their Cook for Kids volunteer program on three occasions during the coming year. We can bring a maximum of six people each time, so if you want to join the fun, watch for the sign-up sheets on the bulletin board by the office and sign up quickly. Our first Cook for Kids date is
Tuesday, August 31st, from 4 to 6 p.m. Carpooling from St. Nicholas will be available.
Participants should also plan to attend a short orientation and organizational meeting on Sunday, August 22nd following the service.
This full-size, industrial quality kitchen is where we will prepare the meals that we serve. The nursery is staffed with a Nutritional Specialist, charged with making sure that the children receive a balanced diet during their stay at the Nursery.
The "Cook For Kids" program allows us to get directly involved! Our small group from St. Nicholas will purchase and donate the food to make a meal for the kids and on-duty Child Care Providers, eat with the kids we're serving, and clean up.
In and out in about two hours, the experience is said to be as exciting and fun for the volunteers as it is for the children.
