The Labyrinth has been with us for millennia. Some labyrinth designs date 2,000 years before the time of Christ. The labyrinth often gets confused with a maze, which it is not. A maze is intended to be “tricky” by its very design. You may head down a path in a maze that brings you to a dead end, forcing you to back track and choose a different path where two or more paths converge. A maze is meant to be a puzzle, something to be figured out. The labyrinth is designed very differently. There is a single path that meanders back and forth, but there are no dead ends.

The path leads to the center, and then following that same path back out takes you to the entrance of the labyrinth.
Labyrinths are a tool for for meditation. They are designed to reflect upon our journey through life. Caroline Adams describes it as follows – “Your life is a sacred journey. And it is about change, growth, discovery, movement, and transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous steps all along the way.
You are on the path – exactly where you are meant to be right now. And from here you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of wisdom, of dignity, of “love.” At its most basic level the labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey to the center of your deepest self and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of who you are.
